1. Production Lead Times

Factories need time to make your order. Here is how long it usually takes:

  • In-Stock Items: 3 to 7 days. These are standard sheets, coils, or pipes already in the warehouse.

  • Standard Orders: 15 to 30 days. This is for normal factory production.

  • Custom Orders: 30 to 45+ days. This is for special sizes, unique shapes, or custom finishes.

Note: Factories get very busy before Chinese New Year (January or February). This can add 2 to 3 weeks to your wait time.

2. Shipping Terms (Incoterms)

Most Chinese suppliers use three main shipping rules. Choose the one that fits your budget:

  • FOB (Free on Board): The supplier sends the steel to the port in China. You pay for the main sea shipping and import steps. This gives you the best control over costs.

  • CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight): The supplier pays to ship the steel to your home port. It is easy, but you might pay higher fees at your local port.

  • EXW (Ex Works): You pick up the goods straight from the factory door. You handle all shipping from start to finish.

3. Shipping Times by Sea

Steel is heavy, so it almost always moves by ship. Here is how long ocean freight takes to different parts of the world:

Destination
Shipping Time
Southeast Asia
5 to 10 Days
Middle East
15 to 25 Days
North America (West Coast)
15 to 25 Days
South America (West Coast)
25 to 35 Days
North America (East Coast)
30 to 40 Days
South America (East Coast)
35 to 45 Days
Europe
30 to 45 Days

Plan Your Order Right

To get your steel on time, use this simple formula:

Total Wait Time = Factory Time + Sea Shipping Time + Customs Check (3-7 days)

Most buyers should place their orders 2 to 3 months before they need the steel. This keeps your project running smoothly without delays.
